PSA: This post will make some people uncomfortable.
I spent 4 days at #MBAAnnual25 watching the "future of mortgage." Took notes. Had conversations. Observed.
And I noticed something that gave me some pause.
The under 40 group seemed trying to be someone else. This is about the next generation of mortgage professionals.
The 30ish-year-old VP mimicking his 60-year-old CEO's speaking style. The 28-year-old techie using buzzwords she didn't seem to believe in. The mid 30's year old originator hiding behind corporate speak when her real superpower was raw authenticity.
Here's what I believe: Your youth isn't a liability to overcome. It's your competitive advantage.
Stop apologizing for not having 30 years in the business. You have something better - you understand the borrower who's shopping for mortgages on their phone at 11 PM. You know why the traditional process feels broken because you just went through it yourself.
The most successful person I met? A person in their late 20's who said "I don't know" twice in our conversation. Then followed up with exactly the right answers 2 hours later.
That's power. That's leadership.
You know what us 58-year-olds need from you? Not a younger version of us. We need YOU. Your perspective. Your questions. Your refusal to accept "because we've always done it this way."
I said what I said.
The mortgage industry doesn't need more people pretending to be someone else. It needs leaders brave enough to be exactly who they are.
Even if they're 28. Especially if they're 28.
Your move, young leaders. Stop performing. Start leading. 💫
